Lower-income New York City residents can take advantage of free tax preparation services offered by NYC Government Agencies this tax season. Individuals without children who earn $30,000 or less annually and individuals with children who earn $54,000 or less annually, can go to more than 200 free tax preparation offices that are located within the five boroughs. Some sites also offer assisted self-preparation help for those making less than $62,000.

Some offices offer “walk in” service where no appointment is necessary. Other offices are by appointment only. There are also offices that do a combination of both. You should check the income eligibility requirements for the specific sites you want to use as well as whether an appointment is necessary before going to the site.

These tax preparation offices feature any combination of in-person, drop-off, or assisted self-preparation services. If you make an in-person appointment, an IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and/or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) volunteer preparer will help you file your taxes. For drop-off, you can drop off all necessary tax documents at a site and pick them up at a later time once your returns are completed. For assisted self-preparation services, you can have an IRS-certified preparer help you file your taxes online.
