New York City has a severe housing crisis. Rents are too high and apartments are not always adequately maintained or kept in livable condition. To make matters worse, hiring a landlord/tenant attorney to fight a landlord can be too expensive for many people.

If you or someone you know has a landlord problem, I want to recommend a non-profit organization that provides free legal advice to low income residents in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan with housing problems. The organization helps with landlord issues including – but not limited to – Eviction Prevention, Illegal Lockouts, Housing Conditions and Other Tenant Rights. The name of the non-profit is MFY Legal Services. (MFY is currently only serving residents of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan. We are searching for a similar non-profit to recommend for Queens and Staten Island residents.)
